As someone who works in e-commerce and marketing every day, I've noticed this shift in my own shopping habits.

Recently, I was looking for a new yoga outfit and wanted to compare different brands by price, material and durability. Instead of spending half an hour switching between ecommerce stores, reviews websites, discussions, I asked ChatGPT. In just a few seconds, it generated a comparison table covering exactly what I cared about - price, materials, durability, and the pros and cons of each brand. I still visited a couple of stores before making my purchase but recently AI became my starting point not Google.

That experience made me realize something important. If I'm already shopping this way, it's hard to believe our customers won't be doing the same. Within seconds, AI analyzes information from multiple sources and delivers a concise, personalized recommendation. For many shoppers, that answer replaces the traditional search results page altogether.

Over the past few months, we've been closely following how AI is changing product discovery for ecommerce businesses. One thing has become clear:

According to DHL's Ecommerce Trends Report 2026, based on research involving 29,000 online shoppers across 29 countries, artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how consumers discover products and make purchasing decisions. DHL summarizes this transformation with a simple statement:

"The old rules no longer apply in the age of AI."

What's even more interesting is the quality of AI-driven traffic:

According to Shopify, visitors arriving from AI-powered search experiences convert at up to 49% higher rates and generate 14% higher average order values than traditional organic traffic. While AI traffic still represents a relatively small percentage of total sessions, it already demonstrates much stronger purchase intent. These are shoppers who aren't casually browsing - they're actively looking for recommendations before making a buying decision.

At the same time, businesses aren't waiting to see what happens. 84% of ecommerce companies already consider AI a strategic priority, while 97% of retailers plan to increase AI investments over the next year. Across the industry, AI is quickly moving from experimentation to an essential part of ecommerce strategy.

AI search works differently from traditional search engines. Instead of returning a list of links, it generates answers, compares products and recommends the options that best match a customer's needs. When someone asks, "What's the best standing desk under $500?", AI analyzes information from multiple sources and recommends products it considers the best fit.

For ecommerce businesses, this changes the goal. Success is no longer measured only by ranking in search results. Increasingly, it's about becoming one of the products AI chooses to recommend.
